The new housing addition considers and upgrades the spatial characteristics of the two existing blocks at the edge of a housing neighbourhood, facing the shopping and industrial part of the small town of Sežana. The concept of ‘3 for 1’ (3 buildings instead of 1) means that the new building is able to become an essential part of the whole, not just an ordinary extension. ‘3 for 1’ is a systematic volumetric structure with a distinctive vertical orientation.
The structural approach emphasizes the structural appearance of the existing buildings, while redefining the sloped roof in order to restore an individual identity of each vertical element. The selection of the facade materials corresponds with the building materials: concrete structural walls become side elevations finished in plaster, while brick walls are finished in fibre cement panels in a vertical layout. The flats are compact, opening to a small introverted loggia with an integrated storage space. The building sets up new morphologies for further housing development to the north, which is currently under construction.
